Summary
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) may negatively impact male reproductive health and thyroid function. This study found associations between PBDE exposure and reduced semen mobility and thyroxin levels in adult men.

Background:
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) are recognized endocrine disruptors with potential adverse effects on male reproduction.
- Persistent organic pollutants, including PBDEs, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and p,p'-DDE, are environmental contaminants of concern.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between serum levels of PBDEs, PCBs, and p,p'-DDE and semen parameters in adult men.
- To examine the association between these environmental chemicals and serum thyroid hormone levels.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 52 men attending a fertility clinic was recruited.
- Semen parameters, serum thyroid hormones (T3, T4, TSH), and serum levels of PBDEs, PCBs, and p,p'-DDE were measured.
- Sociodemographic and medical data were collected via questionnaires and medical records.
Main Results:
- Semen mobility showed a negative correlation with specific PBDE congeners (BDE-47, BDE-100) and the sum of PBDEs (ΣBDE).
- Thyroxin (T4) levels were negatively associated with serum BDE-47, BDE-99, ΣBDE, and p,p'-DDE, and positively associated with ΣPCB.
- No significant associations were found between other semen parameters, T3, TSH, and the measured environmental chemicals.
Conclusions:
- The findings contribute to the evidence suggesting that PBDEs may adversely affect semen quality.
- Exposure to PBDEs may also be linked to alterations in thyroid hormone status in the general population.
