Ankle Joint

The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Main Results:

  • High percentage of good results reported in retrospective studies.
  • Effective pain relief and functional improvement observed for conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, primary/posttraumatic arthritis, flatfoot deformity, and post-clubfoot surgery subluxation.
  • Biomechanical studies confirm the talonavicular joint's importance in hindfoot motion.

Conclusions:

  • Retrospective evidence suggests isolated talonavicular arthrodesis is effective for specific talonavicular joint pathologies.
  • Prospective trials with rigorous methodology are necessary to establish definitive evidence of efficacy.
  • Biomechanical insights can guide future research and clinical application.
