Summary

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) household food security scale (EPSA) significantly underestimates food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean compared to the traditional food insecurity (FI) scale. This suggests the EPSA is not a reliable measure for assessing household food security in this region.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the performance of the EPA household food security scale (EPSA).
  • To compare the EPSA with a traditional food insecurity (FI) scale based on energy consumption.
  • To assess the reliability of the EPSA in the Latin American and Caribbean context.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 211 households was conducted between 2007-2008.
  • The EPSA questionnaire was administered to the primary food preparer.
  • Household consumption was recorded over 24 hours on two separate occasions (R24H) for validation.
