Background:

  • Buttock augmentation with solid silicone implants is a popular cosmetic procedure in the US.
  • Limited outcomes studies exist evaluating the safety and efficacy of this procedure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the outcomes of buttock augmentation using solid silicone implants in a private practice setting.
  • To determine complication rates, need for surgical revision, and aesthetic outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of 200 patients undergoing buttock augmentation with 400 solid silicone implants over eight years.
  • Implants were placed in subfascial (154 patients) or intramuscular (46 patients) positions.
  • Analysis of complication rates, reoperations, and aesthetic results.

Main Results:

  • Overall reoperation rate was 13%. Seroma formation (28%) was the most frequent complication.
  • Infection rate was 6.5%, with an implant infection rate of 3.8%. Other complications included hematoma, wound dehiscence, and capsular contracture.
  • Patients with intramuscular implants reported less inferior gluteal fullness.

Conclusions:

  • Buttock augmentation with solid silicone implants is a safe and satisfying procedure.
  • Seroma formation is the most common complication, manageable with aspiration.
