Background:

Health information often has low readability due to complex medical terminology and sentence structures.
This poses a significant barrier for average consumers accessing essential health knowledge.
Improving health content accessibility is crucial for patient understanding and engagement.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and evaluate a text simplification tool specifically for health-related documents.
To address both semantic difficulties (complex terms) and syntactic complexities (long sentences).
To assess the tool's effectiveness on electronic medical records and journal articles.

Main Methods:

The tool simplifies text by replacing difficult medical terms with simpler synonyms or related concepts.
It also breaks down long, complex sentences into shorter, grammatically correct ones.
The tool was applied to electronic medical records and journal articles for evaluation.

Main Results:

The simplification tool demonstrated effectiveness in simplifying both electronic medical records and journal articles, albeit to different extents.
A cloze test on simplified electronic medical records showed a statistically significant improvement in scores, from 35.8% to 43.6%.
