Surveys02:16

Surveys

Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.
Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV01:26

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...
Bias in Epidemiological Studies01:29

Bias in Epidemiological Studies

Biases can arise at various stages of research, from study design and data collection to analysis and interpretation. Recognizing and addressing these biases is essential to ensure the validity and reliability of epidemiological findings.Broadly speaking, biases in epidemiology fall into three main categories: selection bias, information bias, and confounding. A more detailed description of possible biases is:
Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data01:25

Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data

Epidemiological data primarily involves information on specific populations' occurrence, distribution, and determinants of health and diseases. This data is crucial for understanding disease patterns and impacts, aiding public health decision-making and disease prevention strategies. The analysis of epidemiological data employs various statistical methods to interpret health-related data effectively. Here are some commonly used methods:
Amebiasis01:28

Amebiasis

Entamoeba histolytica, a protozoan parasite, is responsible for intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis. Though a significant proportion of infections remain asymptomatic, approximately 50 million individuals annually are estimated to present with clinical disease, resulting in up to 100,000 deaths globally. The disease burden is disproportionately high in regions with lower socioeconomic status, such as parts of India, Africa, Mexico, and Latin America.Etiology and TransmissionThe infective...
Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Summary

Smoking rates declined among Israeli Jews but increased among Arab men from 2000-2008. This trend exacerbates health disparities, particularly among academics and non-academics.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Health Disparities

Background:

  • Smoking poses a significant public health burden and incurs substantial healthcare costs.
  • Efforts to reduce smoking rates have been ongoing for decades.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare smoking rate trends in Israel between adult Arab men and Jewish men and women.
  • To analyze these trends from 2000 to 2008.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from six random telephone surveys conducted by the Israel Center for Disease Control (ICDC) between 2000 and 2008.
  • Analyzed smoking prevalence among 24,976 Jewish respondents and 2,564 Arab men, stratified by age, gender, and education.

Main Results:

  • Observed a 3.5% decline in smoking among Jewish men (ages 21-64) and a similar decline among Jewish women (ages 21-64) during the study period.
  • The decline in smoking among Jewish populations was primarily driven by individuals with academic education.
  • Conversely, smoking rates increased by approximately 6.5% among Arab men (ages 21-64), irrespective of educational background.

Conclusions:

  • Smoking prevalence is decreasing among Israeli Jews but not among Arab men.
  • The differential decline in smoking rates, especially among academics, is projected to widen health inequalities between socioeconomic and ethnic groups.
  • Tailored public health interventions are recommended for less educated Jewish populations and all Arab men to address these disparities.
