Preparation and Reactions of Sulfides02:26

Preparation and Reactions of Sulfides

Sulfides are the sulfur analog of ethers, just as thiols are the sulfur analog of alcohol. Like ethers, sulfides also consist of two hydrocarbon groups bonded to the central sulfur atom. Depending upon the type of groups present, sulfides can be symmetrical or asymmetrical. Symmetrical sulfides can be prepared via an SN2 reaction between 2 equivalents of an alkyl halide and one equivalent of sodium sulfide.

Aldehydes and Ketones to Alkenes: Wittig Reaction Mechanism

The Wittig reaction, which converts aldehydes or ketones to alkenes using phosphorus ylides, proceeds through a nucleophilic addition‒elimination process.
The reaction begins with the nucleophilic addition between a phosphorus ylide and the carbonyl compound. Due to its carbanionic character, phosphorus ylide acts as a strong nucleophile and attacks the electrophilic carbonyl group. This generates a charge-separated dipolar intermediate called betaine. The negatively charged oxygen atom and...
Structural Isomerism02:34

Structural Isomerism

Isomerism in Complexes
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula. Structural isomerism of coordination compounds can be divided into two subcategories, the linkage isomers and coordination-sphere isomers.
Linkage isomers occur when the coordination compound contains a ligand that can bind to the transition metal center through two different atoms. For example, the CN− ligand can bind through the carbon atom or through the nitrogen atom. Similarly, SCN− can be...

Area of Science:

  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Materials Science
  • Supramolecular Chemistry

Background:

  • Silver(I)-phenylethynide complexes represent a class of compounds with diverse structural possibilities.
  • Vanadium-oxide polyhedra, such as the [((t)BuPO(3))(4)V(4)O(8)](4-) unit, can serve as versatile building blocks in cluster synthesis.
  • The incorporation of template anions is crucial for directing the self-assembly of complex inorganic frameworks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize and characterize novel neutral silver(I)-phenylethynide clusters.
  • To investigate the role of the [((t)BuPO(3))(4)V(4)O(8)](4-) unit as a shell component in cluster formation.
  • To explore the structural diversity achieved by varying template anions within silver-phenylethynide frameworks.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of silver(I)-phenylethynide clusters.
  • Characterization using X-ray crystallography.
  • Analysis of cluster composition and structural features.

Main Results:

  • Isolation and structural elucidation of two neutral silver(I)-phenylethynide clusters: {(NO(3))(2)@Ag(16)(C≡CPh)(4)[((t)BuPO(3))(4)V(4)O(8)](2)(DMF)(6)(NO(3))(2)}·DMF·H(2)O and {[(O(2))V(2)O(6)](3)@Ag(43)(C≡CPh)(19)[((t)BuPO(3))(4)V(4)O(8)](3)(DMF)(6)}·5DMF·2H(2)O.
  • The [((t)BuPO(3))(4)V(4)O(8)](4-) unit was successfully incorporated as an integral shell component in both clusters.
  • X-ray crystallography revealed distinct central cavities occupied by nitrate (NO(3)(-)) and vanadate ([(O(2))V(2)O(6)](4-)) template anions.
