Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Plan reconstruction is crucial for prostate brachytherapy quality assurance.
  • It verifies seed segmentation, misplacement, migration, and dosimetry for permanent implants.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Develop and evaluate an algorithm for accurate plan reconstruction of stranded implants.
  • Improve accuracy in postimplant analysis for permanent implant prostate brachytherapy.

Main Methods:

  • An algorithm utilizing interseed spacing constraints from sutures was developed for stranded implants.
  • Seventy clinical cases were automatically reconstructed and compared to manual reconstructions using a 3D graphical interface.

Main Results:

  • The automatic algorithm achieved a mean accuracy of 97.7 +/- 0.5% compared to manual reconstruction.
  • 74% of cases were error-free; remaining cases showed high accuracy in seed attribution and neighbor connectivity.
  • Reconstruction accuracy was not affected by seed/needle count, density, or clusters.

Conclusions:

  • Routine plan reconstruction of stranded implants is achievable with high accuracy.
  • This method supports postimplant dosimetry and quality analyses in prostate brachytherapy.
