Compositae mix allergy testing in Sweden found low prevalence, suggesting it may not be essential for baseline screening. Geographical variations necessitate further discussion on its inclusion versus Sesquiterpene lactone mix.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Allergology
  • Contact Dermatitis

Background:

  • Sesquiterpene lactone mix is a standard marker for Asteraceae plant family allergies.
  • Compositae mix is an alternative marker not widely included in baseline allergy series.
  • Investigating Compositae mix inclusion in Swedish baseline allergy testing is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the necessity of including Compositae mix in the Swedish baseline allergy series.
  • To compare the prevalence and significance of Compositae mix versus Sesquiterpene lactone mix allergies.
  • To address geographical variations in allergen frequencies.

Main Methods:

  • Six dermatology centers in Sweden participated in the study.
  • Compositae mix was added to their baseline series for 1.5 years.

  • 2818 patients were tested for contact allergies.
  • Main Results:

    • 1.1% of patients reacted to Compositae mix, and 0.9% reacted to Sesquiterpene lactone mix.
    • Only two cases of active sensitization to Compositae mix were observed.
    • Excluding Compositae mix would have missed only 0.4% of Asteraceae contact allergy cases.

    Conclusions:

    • The low detection rate suggests Compositae mix may not warrant inclusion in the standard Swedish baseline series.
    • Geographical differences in allergen prevalence require tailored approaches to baseline series composition.
    • Consideration should be given to substituting Sesquiterpene lactone mix with Compositae mix or vice versa based on regional data.
