Summary

Panic attacks may end because prolonged hyperventilation lessens bodily sensations. Even with continued hyperventilation, panic symptoms decreased in healthy subjects, suggesting a time-limited nature of panic due to reduced sensory input.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • Twenty healthy subjects underwent forceful hyperventilation for 90 minutes, maintaining a 55% reduction in pCO2.
  • A control group (n=20) engaged in normal ventilation.
