Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prevalence and extent of SR.
  • To determine if ND changes with reductions in cigarettes per day (CPD).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 6,955 daily smokers (ages 25-44) from the COGEND study.
  • Used a modified Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) to assess current and peak ND.
  • Analyzed changes in ND excluding the direct contribution of CPD.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 44% of participants reported SR, with a mean reduction of 14.4 CPD (54.0%).
  • SR magnitude was associated with decreased ND, even when controlling for peak smoking and years smoked.

Conclusions:

  • Self-reported SR is associated with reduced nicotine dependence.
  • The effects of SR on smoking cessation and health require further investigation.
