Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of a 12-week supervised exercise program on blood platelet count, aggregation, and plasma beta-thromboglobulin (beta-TG) in healthy sedentary adults.
  • To determine how exercise conditioning influences acute exercise responses versus resting platelet function markers.

Main Methods:

  • Six healthy, sedentary adults (3 male, 3 female) underwent 12 weeks of supervised treadmill exercise (20 min, 3x/week, 70-80% max heart rate).
  • Platelet counts, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) aggregation, and whole blood aggregation (impedance aggregometry) were measured pre-training, and at 6 and 12 weeks.

    • Exercise conditioning alters acute platelet responses to exercise, with initial increases in aggregation potential followed by a training-induced dampening.
    • Regular exercise improves resting platelet function and reduces markers of platelet activation, suggesting a beneficial effect on cardiovascular health.
