Forward collision warning/mitigation and lane departure warning/prevention systems show significant potential for reducing crashes. Combined, these vehicle safety technologies could prevent over 1.8 million crashes annually in the U.S.
Area of Science:
- Traffic Safety
- Automotive Engineering
- Human Factors in Transportation
Background:
- Vehicle-based crash avoidance technologies are increasingly sophisticated.
- Previous estimates of their effectiveness may not fully account for current system limitations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To update estimates of potential crash reductions from four key technologies: side view assist, forward collision warning/mitigation, lane departure warning/prevention, and adaptive headlights.
- To refine estimates by considering limitations of current systems.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of 2004-2008 National Automotive Sampling System General Estimates System (NASS GES) and Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) crash data.
- Review of crash descriptors to determine technology applicability for crash prevention or mitigation.
Main Results:
- Forward collision warning/mitigation has the highest potential applicability, relevant to 1.2 million U.S. crashes annually.
- Lane departure warning/prevention is relevant to 179,000 crashes/year and potentially 7,500 fatal crashes/year.
- A combination of all four technologies could prevent or mitigate up to 1,866,000 crashes annually, including 10,238 fatal crashes.
Conclusions:
- Vehicle-based crash avoidance systems demonstrate substantial potential for improving road safety.
- Real-world driver interaction and experience are crucial for determining actual system effectiveness.
