Nitric oxide (NO) signals between cells via gas diffusion (NO/cGMP pathway) or S-nitrosylation (SNO pathway). The SNO pathway uses amino acid transporters for larger molecules like S-nitrosylated cysteine (CysNO) to cross membranes.
