Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Internal Medicine
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Potassium iodide therapy can rarely cause adverse skin reactions.
  • Vegetating iododerma is an uncommon manifestation of iodide hypersensitivity.

Observation:

  • Three patients developed vegetating iododerma during potassium iodide therapy.
  • Patient 1 had polyarteritis nodosa.
  • Patients 2 and 3 had monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and multiple myeloma, respectively.

Findings:

  • Vegetating iododerma appears to be an idiosyncratic response to iodides.
  • Patients with polyarteritis nodosa and paraproteinemias may have a predisposition to developing this condition.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Awareness of this reaction is crucial for clinicians prescribing iodides.
  • Further research may elucidate the mechanisms of iodide hypersensitivity in predisposed individuals.
  • Early recognition and management can prevent severe cutaneous manifestations.
