Retrieval

Retrieval is the process of getting information out of memory storage and back into conscious awareness. This ability is essential for daily tasks like brushing hair and teeth, driving to work, and performing job duties. Retrieval occurs in three ways: recall, recognition, and relearning.

Background:

  • Previous research identified two frontal event-related potential (ERP) indices linked to post-retrieval processes.
  • One ERP index is thought to process general task-relevant information, while the other selectively processes episodic contextual information.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the hypothesis that one frontal ERP index selectively processes episodic contextual information.
  • To investigate if this ERP index is sensitive to the type of contextual information retrieved.

Main Methods:

  • Participants studied words presented in either a male or female voice.
  • Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during a visual test phase.
  • Participants made old/new judgments and identified the voice in which studied words were heard.

Main Results:

  • Evidence for only one of the two previously identified frontal old/new effects was found.
  • This suggests that the ERP effect tied to recollection might be selective in the type of contextual information it reflects.

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the idea that certain ERP indices of memory recollection are sensitive to the nature of retrieved contextual details.
  • An alternative explanation is that this ERP index is engaged when few distinguishing contextual features are available for studied items.
