Summary

A rhesus macaque infected with simian immunodeficiency virus developed a labial ulcer. Immunohistochemistry and DNA sequencing identified Macacine herpesvirus 1 (B virus) as the cause.

Background:

  • Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection in rhesus macaques can lead to opportunistic infections.
  • B virus (Macacine herpesvirus 1) is a common herpesvirus in macaques, typically causing asymptomatic infection in its natural host.
  • Clinical signs in macaques can vary, and coinfections are possible.

Observation:

  • A 2-year-old female rhesus macaque with a history of SIV infection presented with diarrhea, weight loss, and a labial ulcer.
  • Histopathology of the ulcer revealed inflammation with neutrophils, macrophages, and syncytial epithelial cells.
  • Rare epithelial cells contained herpetic inclusion bodies.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemistry confirmed the presence of Human herpesvirus 1 antigens in the affected epithelial cells.
