Summary

Single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) offers comparable performance to double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) for small bowel evaluation. This randomized trial found SBE non-inferior to DBE in insertion depth and diagnostic yield, with similar patient discomfort.

Background:

  • Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) is the standard for small bowel visualization but is complex to handle.
  • Single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) was developed as a simpler alternative for balloon-assisted enteroscopy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the performance and diagnostic yield of SBE versus DBE in small bowel evaluation.
  • To assess key outcomes including insertion depth, visualization rates, and patient comfort.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, international, multicenter trial comparing DBE and SBE.
  • 130 patients were randomized, with outcomes including oral/anal insertion depth, complete small bowel visualization, and patient-reported discomfort via visual analog scale.
  • Patients were blinded to the enteroscope type used.
