Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Electromagnetics
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Electromagnetic field interaction with biological tissues is crucial for cancer treatment research.
  • Microwave hyperthermia offers a promising non-invasive approach to cancer therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a slot-line applicator for microwave hyperthermia in treating superficial cancers.
  • To determine the suitability of this applicator for target depths of 2-3 cm.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a 3D electromagnetic field simulator to predict specific absorbed ratio (SAR) and temperature distribution.
  • Validated simulation results with experimental temperature measurements using an infrared thermo-camera on an agar phantom.
  • Analyzed array configurations for treating larger areas via SAR distribution simulations.

Main Results:

  • The slot-line applicator demonstrated suitability for superficial cancer treatment at depths of 2-3 cm.
  • Simulated SAR and temperature distributions were consistent with experimental phantom measurements.
  • Array configurations show potential for treating larger superficial tumors.

Conclusions:

  • The slot-line applicator is a viable tool for microwave hyperthermia in oncology for superficial tumors.
  • This technology shows promise for targeted, non-invasive cancer treatment.
  • Further research into array configurations could expand treatment capabilities.
