Background:

The Nuss procedure is a standard surgical repair for pectus excavatum.
Traditional Nuss procedures involve bilateral incisions.
Minimally invasive techniques aim to reduce surgical trauma and improve cosmesis.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe a novel single-incision modification of the Nuss procedure.
To compare the outcomes of the modified technique with the standard Nuss procedure.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of 32 patients (2007-2010).
Comparison of 14 patients undergoing modified Nuss (MN) versus 18 patients undergoing standard Nuss (SN).
Single right lateral thoracic incision for dissection, thoracoscopy, and bar placement; subcutaneous dissection for contralateral dissection; unilateral bar stabilizer.

Main Results:

No statistically significant differences in patient demographics between MN and SN groups.
No significant differences in operative variables between MN and SN groups.
No significant differences in postoperative course parameters between MN and SN groups.

Conclusions:

The single-incision modified Nuss procedure is a safe alternative to the standard technique.
Efficacy of the modified Nuss procedure is comparable to the traditional method.
This modification may offer advantages in patient recovery and cosmetic outcomes.
