[Stomatology under the social security system of Guatemala]
1Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social, C. A.
Abstract:
In an effort to evaluate dental health care in the Guatemalan social security system and to introduce pertinent changes, a study of dental health care activities in the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) was undertaken, beginning with a review of its functions as designated to the IGSS by national law. The aspects evaluated led to the conclusion that the IGSS does not provide satisfactory dental care to all its beneficiaries. It is therefore necessary to modify its activities. Attention is called to the need for epidemiological research that will provide the basis for adapting dental health care activities to the real needs of IGSS beneficiaries. It is also necessary to implement community primary prevention measures and to substantially alter the clinical care models.
