Summary

Laparoscopic synchronous bilateral adrenalectomy is a safe and effective surgical technique for managing benign adrenal conditions. This approach offers a feasible and reproducible option for patients requiring simultaneous removal of both adrenal glands.

Background:

Bilateral adrenalectomies present unique surgical challenges.
Laparoscopic approaches are increasingly favored for adrenal surgery due to reduced morbidity.

Purpose of the Study:

To detail the technique and outcomes of bilateral synchronous laparoscopic adrenalectomies.
To evaluate the safety and reproducibility of this surgical approach.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of 242 laparoscopic adrenalectomies over 8 years.
Analysis of 22 synchronous bilateral cases, detailing patient demographics and pathology.
Surgical technique, operative time, blood loss, and complication rates were recorded.

The mean operative time was 78.6 minutes with minimal blood loss (mean 63 ml).
Intraoperative complications were rare (2%), with one instance of renal vein tear successfully managed.
Mean hospital stay was short at 3.2 days, indicating efficient recovery.

Conclusions:

Laparoscopic synchronous bilateral adrenalectomy is a feasible and safe procedure.
The technique is reproducible for managing benign bilateral adrenal pathologies.
This approach should be considered a primary option for suitable patients.
