    Summary

Surgical intervention offers high cure rates for glomus jugulare and glomus vagale tumors. While radiotherapy shows moderate response, embolization provides palliative relief and reduces bleeding but does not eliminate tumors.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuro-oncology
    • Vascular Surgery
    • Otolaryngology

    Background:

    • Glomus jugulare and glomus vagale tumors are rare neuroendocrine neoplasms.
    • Effective treatment strategies are crucial for managing these challenging conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the therapeutic outcomes of surgery, radiotherapy, and embolization for glomus jugulare and glomus vagale tumors.
    • To assess the efficacy and limitations of each treatment modality.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 72 patients with glomus jugulare and 9 with glomus vagale.
    • Comparison of surgical cure rates, radiotherapy response and cure rates, and embolization outcomes.
    • Assessment of symptomatic relief and tumor persistence post-embolization.

    Main Results:

    • Surgical cure rates were 80% for glomus jugulare and 100% for glomus vagale.
    • Radiotherapy achieved a 65% tumor response and 25% cure rate.
    • Embolization reduced tumor size and external carotid artery flow but did not eradicate tumors, though it offered palliative relief and reduced bleeding.

    Conclusions:

    • Surgery is highly effective for glomus jugulare and glomus vagale tumors.
    • Radiotherapy offers a moderate alternative with limited curative potential.
    • Embolization serves as a valuable palliative measure for symptom management and intraoperative bleeding control in select patients.
