Summary

Older drivers with cognitive-perceptual deficits are significantly more likely to exhibit unsafe driving behaviors and crash in simulations. Addressing these deficits is crucial for improving senior driving safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the association between cognitive-perceptual problems and unsafe driving performance in older drivers.
  • To compare the driving performance and cognitive-perceptual function of older drivers with younger drivers.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted with 55 older drivers (65+) and 48 younger drivers.
  • Cognitive-perceptual function was assessed using the Cognitive Perceptual Assessment for Driving (CPAD).
  • Driving performance was evaluated using a virtual reality driving simulator, recording crashes and unsafe maneuvers.

Main Results:

  • Older drivers performed significantly worse on the CPAD and driving simulator than younger drivers.
  • Failing the CPAD was associated with increased likelihood of car crashes, and errors in steering, vehicle positioning, and lane changes.
  • Older drivers who failed CPAD were 4x more likely to crash and 6.5x more likely to make lane change errors.

Conclusions:

  • Unsafe driving and crashes during simulation were more common in older drivers.
  • Cognitive-perceptual dysfunction is linked to unsafe driving performance, including steering, vehicle positioning, lane changes, and crashes.
  • These findings highlight the importance of cognitive-perceptual assessment for older driver safety.
