Summary

A HIV/AIDS module significantly improved teachers' self-efficacy in promoting responsible living and reducing HIV spread. This enhanced confidence also improved understanding of barriers and motivated community involvement.

Background:

HIV/AIDS remains a significant global health challenge.
Effective HIV/AIDS education in schools is crucial for behavior change.
Teacher self-efficacy is a key factor in delivering health education.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the impact of an HIV/AIDS module on teachers' self-efficacy.
To explore how improved self-efficacy influences teachers' approach to HIV/AIDS education.
To identify factors supporting effective school-based HIV/AIDS policies.

Main Methods:

Quantitative data collected using a modified Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI).
Qualitative data gathered through semi-structured individual and focus group interviews.
Statistical analyses included ANOVA and MANOVA on pre- and post-test scores from 128 teachers across South Africa.

Main Results:

Statistically significant increases in teacher self-efficacy scores post-module.
Qualitative data indicated enhanced understanding of cultural barriers and policy impediments.
Teachers reported increased confidence in addressing HIV/AIDS and supporting affected individuals.

Conclusions:

The HIV/AIDS module effectively boosts teacher self-efficacy for health education.
Improved teacher confidence facilitates better understanding and implementation of HIV/AIDS policies.
School leadership and teacher confidence are vital for community-level HIV/AIDS initiatives.
