Pneumoperitoneum needle and trocar injuries in laparoscopy. A survey on possible contributing factors and prevention

Fifty-one percent (407) of 800 certified Canadian obstetrician-gynecologists responded to a mail survey regarding laparoscopic procedures. Training and experience in performing laparoscopy were assessed. Experience with needle and sharp trocar injuries was also evaluated. One-quarter of the respondents had experienced at least one case of sharp trocar or needle injury, with half the cases requiring laparotomy for correction. Opinions on a new trocar-and-sheath system designed to reduce the risk of intraperitoneal injuries associated with trocar insertion were also elicited. The physician response to such an instrument was extremely positive; cost was the major negative concern.
