  • To identify preoperative factors predicting the development of stiff knee after primary TKA in patients with medial compartment osteoarthritis.
  • To compare clinical and radiographic parameters between patients who developed stiff knee and those who did not.

Summary:

  • A study of 48 patients (53 knees) undergoing TKA found that 16% developed stiff knee.
  • Preoperative limited flexion range and lower American Knee Society scores were significantly associated with the development of post-TKA stiff knee.
  • No significant effect was found for age, gender, tibiofemoral angle, tibial slope, joint line changes, patellar tendon length, or component size/position.

Impact:

  • Findings suggest that preoperative assessment of knee flexion and functional scores can help identify patients at higher risk for stiffness.
  • This information can guide surgical planning and postoperative management to potentially mitigate the incidence of stiff knee after TKA.
