Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize and compare the cognitive profile of LOPS patients with elderly EOS patients.
  • To examine the natural evolution of cognitive function in both LOPS and EOS groups.
  • To identify potential differences in cognitive deficits and vulnerabilities between LOPS and EOS.

Main Methods:

  • Neuropsychological assessments were conducted on 15 LOPS patients, 17 elderly EOS patients, and two control groups.
  • The longitudinal evolution of cognitive function was evaluated using a blinded, consensual diagnostic procedure.
  • Consensus diagnosis involved geriatric psychiatry physicians/clinicians and neuropsychologists.

Main Results:

  • EOS patients showed significant memory and executive impairments versus controls; LOPS patients did not show significant differences when age/education were accounted for.

  • Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) were common in LOPS (40%), and 20% of LOPS met dementia criteria versus 5.9% of EOS patients.

Conclusions:

  • LOPS are associated with cognitive deficits, particularly in executive functions, and show vulnerability to vascular and neurodegenerative processes.
  • Findings suggest distinct cognitive profiles and evolutionary patterns for LOPS compared to EOS.
  • Larger studies are recommended to validate these findings and refine understanding of LOPS.
