Background:

The Doctor of Nursing Science (DNS) program at Indiana University School of Nursing was established in 1978 and phased out in 1996.
The PhD in Nursing Science program was approved in 1996.

Purpose of the Study:

To discuss the process and outcome evaluation of an innovative, distance-accessible PhD in Nursing Science program.
To focus on effective pedagogies for scholarly mentoring and best practices in distance doctoral education.

Main Methods:

Revision of the PhD program in 2002 to incorporate distance-accessible learning using synchronous and asynchronous web-based technologies.
Pairing distance-accessible courses with an annual 2-week summer residential intensive learning experience on campus.

Main Results:

Evaluation of program outcomes indicates graduates are well-positioned for leadership roles.
Graduates are prepared to contribute to knowledge development in nursing science, practice, and education.

Conclusions:

The revised distance-accessible PhD program effectively prepares nursing leaders.
The program demonstrates successful integration of technology and residential intensives for doctoral education.
