Pediatric calcaneal nonunion due to cartilaginous interposition: a case report

Nonunion of the calcaneum is a rare clinical situation, and it has not been observed in the pediatric age group. The authors hereby report a case of 14-year-old boy with a 6-month history of fall, treated by native bone setters by a below knee splint who had radio-logic evidence of calcaneal nonunion. He was treated by open reduction and internal fixation during which soft tissue interposition was seen intraoperatively. The fracture united uneventfully in 8 weeks after the surgical treatment. Histological analysis of the soft tissue showed the interposition of a cartilaginous fragment.
