Summary

A new patient-reported outcomes tool effectively measures the handicapping effects of dysphagia across physical, emotional, and functional domains. This validated questionnaire provides clinicians with a robust measure for assessing swallowing therapy success.

Background:

Quality-of-life indicators are crucial for evaluating dysphagia (swallowing difficulty) treatment outcomes.
Existing measures may not fully capture the comprehensive impact of dysphagia on patients' lives.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a clinically efficient, statistically robust patient-reported outcomes (PRO) tool.
To measure the handicapping effects of dysphagia on emotional, functional, and physical aspects of life.

Main Methods:

Collected 60 dysphagia-related statements from patients, categorized into physical, emotional, and functional subscales.
Administered initial questionnaire to 77 dysphagia patients; refined to 25 items.
Validated the final 25-item questionnaire with 214 dysphagia patients and 74 controls, assessing internal consistency (Cronbach's α) and test-retest reliability.
