Cytoskeletal Linker Proteins - Plakins

2.8K
Plakins are large proteins with binding domains for microtubules, microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and membrane-associated protein complexes at cell junctions. Plakin functions are evolutionarily conserved and are primarily involved in organizing the different components of the cytoskeleton by crosslinking them to each other and connecting them to the cell-matrix and cell adhesion complexes. They are also known to interact with signal transducers, serve as scaffolds for signaling...

DNA Topoisomerases02:02

DNA Topoisomerases

35.3K
Topoisomerases are enzymes that relax overwound DNA molecules during various cell processes, including DNA replication and transcription. These enzymes regulate positive and negative DNA supercoiling without changing the nucleotide sequence. DNA overwinding in a clockwise direction results in positively supercoiled DNA, whereas underwinding in a counterclockwise direction produces negatively supercoiled DNA.

DNA Helicases

24.0K
DNA unwinding helicase enzymes are a type of motor protein. Motor proteins can translocate along filaments or polymers using energy generated from ATP hydrolysis. Helicases are involved in all the important cellular processes where DNA unwinding is required, such as DNA replication, repair, recombination, and transcription. They are present in all living organisms, but vary in their structure, function, and mechanism of action. For example, in prokaryotes, DnaB helicase binds and translocates...

DNA Replication02:40

DNA Replication

59.1K
DNA replication involves the separation of the two strands of the double helix, with each strand serving as a template from which the new complementary strand is copied.  After replication, each double-stranded DNA includes one parental or “old” strand and one “new” strand. This is known as semiconservative replication. The resulting DNA molecules have the same sequence and are divided equally into the two daughter cells.

Summary

A new web tool uses DNA barcoding and a Google-type search to quickly identify species from DNA sequences. This enhances access to biological information for researchers and non-specialists alike.

Area of Science:

  • Bioinformatics
  • Molecular Biology
  • Taxonomy

Background:

  • DNA barcoding uses short DNA sequences for rapid identification of biological specimens.
  • Reference databases for DNA barcoding are under development.
  • Future efforts must ensure user-friendly access to these databases, especially for non-specialists.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a rapid, web-based tool for linking DNA sequences to biological information.
  • To facilitate species identification for both specialists and non-specialists.
  • To provide easy access to a growing DNA barcode reference database.

Main Methods:

  • A customized, Google-type search algorithm was employed.
  • The algorithm matches unknown DNA sequences to verified DNA barcodes in a reference database.
