Summary

Dexamphetamine enhanced the rubber hand illusion (RHI), increasing feelings of ownership of the fake hand and reducing ownership of the real hand. This study offers insights into body representation and dopamine activity, relevant to schizophrenia.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Corporeal awareness is crucial for self-consciousness and is often disrupted in neurological and psychiatric conditions.
  • The rubber hand illusion (RHI) is a key tool for studying the neural basis of body awareness.
  • Further research is needed to explore dissociable constructs within the RHI and body awareness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of increased dopamine transmission on the RHI in healthy participants.
  • To examine how dexamphetamine affects specific quantitative constructs of the RHI, including embodiment, ownership, movement perception, affect, deafference, and proprioceptive drift.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over design was employed.
  • Twenty healthy participants received either dexamphetamine (0.45 mg/kg) or a placebo.
  • The study quantitatively assessed various constructs of the RHI.

Main Results:

  • Dexamphetamine significantly increased embodiment, specifically "ownership," of the rubber hand.
  • Participants reported a loss of ownership of their real hand after dexamphetamine administration.
  • While placebo showed effects on movement and proprioceptive drift, dexamphetamine did not.

Conclusions:

  • This study demonstrates a novel pharmacological manipulation of RHI constructs using dexamphetamine.
  • Findings suggest a link between dopamine activity, body representation, and the RHI.
  • The results may enhance understanding of disorders like schizophrenia, which involve disturbances in both dopamine and body representation.
