Brain Imaging

Brain imaging technologies provide critical insights into both the structure and function of the human brain, enabling medical professionals and researchers to diagnose, study, and treat neurological disorders or psychiatric disorders more effectively.
These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Neurology
  • Brain Stimulation Techniques

Background:

  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an emerging technique for brain stimulation.
  • It has applications in understanding brain physiology, diagnostics, and therapeutics for neuropsychiatric conditions.

Observation:

  • TMS allows for targeted stimulation of restricted cortical and subcortical regions.
  • Combining TMS with visual guidance enhances accuracy in targeting specific brain areas.
  • This precision may influence therapeutic or diagnostic outcomes.

Findings:

  • The article reviews the fundamental principles of TMS mechanisms of action.
  • It discusses the application of TMS for creating functional maps of the motor and visual cortex.
  • Technical aspects crucial for accurate and reproducible mapping are examined.

Implications:

  • TMS provides valuable insights into brain function and organization.
  • It holds significant potential for diagnosing and treating various neurological and psychiatric disorders.
  • Optimized TMS techniques can lead to more effective and reliable brain mapping procedures.
