Summary

This report details a rare mediastinal neurofibroma originating from the phrenic nerve. Surgical removal offers an excellent prognosis for this unusual intrathoracic tumor.

  • Neurofibromas originating from the phrenic nerve are exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 59-year-old woman presented with a mediastinal mass.
  • Radiological findings suggested a neurogenic origin.
  • The patient did not have von Recklinghausen disease.

Findings:

  • A neurofibroma was diagnosed, arising from the phrenic nerve.
  • Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis post-excision.
  • This represents the second reported case of a phrenic nerve-originating mediastinal neurofibroma.

Implications:

  • Accurate diagnosis of rare mediastinal tumors is crucial.
  • Complete surgical resection provides a favorable outcome for phrenic nerve neurofibromas.
  • Further research may elucidate the specific etiology of these rare presentations.
