Multidetector CT (MDCT) can detect glass orbital foreign bodies, especially dense ones. Detection is reliable for glass slivers larger than 0.2 mm³ regardless of type.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Radiology
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Orbital foreign bodies pose diagnostic challenges.
  • Glass slivers are a common type of intraocular foreign body.
  • Multidetector CT (MDCT) is a key imaging modality for orbital trauma.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the detection capabilities of MDCT for orbital glass foreign bodies.
  • To determine the minimum detectable size and density of glass slivers using MDCT.
  • To establish reliable detection thresholds for glass fragments in the orbit.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic measurement of Hounsfield Units (HU) for 20 materials, including 16 types of glass.
  • Scanning of an orbital phantom with a 16-slice MDCT using a standardized protocol.

  • Experimental detection of sub-millimeter glass slivers with varying densities.
  • Main Results:

    • Glass exhibits high density (≥2000 HU), with refractive types reaching up to 12,400 HU.
    • Theoretically, the minimum detectable glass volume is 0.07 mm³ (at 2000 HU).
    • Experimentally, only glass slivers >8300 HU were detectable below 0.01 mm³; reliable detection occurred for volumes ≥0.2 mm³.

    Conclusions:

    • Glass orbital foreign bodies are generally detectable due to their high density.
    • Detection limits depend on glass density and size, with high-density glass detectable at 0.01 mm³.
    • MDCT reliably detects glass slivers ≥0.2 mm³ irrespective of glass type.
