Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a central nervous system demyelinating disorder with incompletely understood pathogenesis.
  • Environmental and hormonal factors are increasingly implicated in autoimmune disease development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum ferritin and prolactin levels in MS patients.
  • To determine the correlation between these biomarker levels and clinical disease manifestations.

Main Methods:

  • Serum samples from 150 MS patients and 100 healthy controls were analyzed.
  • Prolactin and ferritin levels were measured using Liaison chemiluminescent immunoassays.
  • Demographic and clinical data were collected and correlated with biomarker levels.

Main Results:

  • Hyperprolactinemia (6.7%) and hyperferritinemia (8%) were significantly more prevalent in MS patients than controls.
  • In female MS patients, elevated prolactin correlated with secondary-progressive MS.
  • Hyperferritinemia was linked to male gender and relapsing-progressive MS, with an inverse association in male relapsing-remitting MS.

Conclusions:

  • Ferritin and prolactin show plausible associations with specific clinical subtypes and gender in MS.
  • Further research integrating clinical data, CNS imaging, and these biomarkers is recommended.
