Tumor Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Summary

Cutaneous cytotoxic T-cell lymphoma (C-CTL) is a rare CD56+ lymphoma. Methotrexate effectively treated an 83-year-old woman's extensive skin lesions, despite intolerance to bexarotene due to cardiac issues.

  • Cutaneous cytotoxic T-cell lymphoma (C-CTL) is a rare T-cell neoplasm characterized by CD56 expression.

  • An 83-year-old female presented with numerous skin infiltrates and nodules predominantly on the face and trunk.
  • Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of C-CTL.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced cardiac insufficiency, precluding treatment with bexarotene.
  • Treatment with methotrexate (7.5 mg weekly) resulted in rapid regression of all cutaneous lesions.

Implications:
