Summary

Humans may possess a "sociometer" that links social acceptance to self-esteem. Brain scans reveal that rejection activates regions associated with lower self-esteem, informing our understanding of self-perception.

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to measure brain activity.
