Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the pattern of morbidity among rice mill workers.
  • To examine the relationship between years of employment and workers' health status.
  • To identify specific health issues prevalent in this occupational group.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study design was employed.
  • Data collected via pre-structured questionnaires covering clinical history, sociodemographics, and clinical examination findings.
  • Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) was measured; statistical analysis used the Chi-square test.

Main Results:

  • Respiratory morbidity affected 42.66% of the 75 workers studied.
  • 10.66% exhibited reduced PEFR (<200 L/min), indicating respiratory impairment.
  • Musculoskeletal issues, including low backache, knee pain, and generalized pain, were reported by 26.66% and 20% of workers, respectively. Allergic conjunctivitis and skin allergies were observed in 6.6% and 4% of workers.

Conclusions:

  • A high prevalence of respiratory morbidity (42.66%) and decreased PEFR (10.66%) was identified in rice mill workers.
  • A statistically significant association was found between the duration of employment and respiratory morbid conditions.
  • Health education and the use of safety devices are recommended for prevention, with a call for further research.
