Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Primary pancreatic small cell carcinoma (SCC) is an exceptionally rare malignancy.
  • Limited data exists on the prognosis and optimal treatment for resectable pancreatic SCC.

Observation:

  • This study reports on six patients with resectable pancreatic SCC from two institutions.
  • All patients underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy, and received adjuvant therapy, predominantly chemoradiation with cisplatin and etoposide.

Findings:

  • The median survival in this series was 20 months, significantly longer than previously reported for pancreatic SCC.
  • One patient achieved a record 173-month survival with chemoradiation, highlighting potential treatment efficacy.

Implications:

  • Pancreatic SCC, though rare, may have a better prognosis with surgical intervention and adjuvant therapy.
