Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing stops intermittently during sleep, often leading to significant health issues. Each episode can last from 10 to 20 seconds or more and is frequently accompanied by a brief arousal from sleep. This disturbance, largely unnoticed by the individual, can lead to severe daytime fatigue. Commonly, individuals seek help after being informed by their partners about loud snoring and noticeable breathing pauses during sleep.
The condition is more prevalent among...

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation II: ACLS Airway Management

Airway management is a key skill in emergency and critical care settings, as maintaining a clear airway is essential for adequate oxygenation and ventilation.Head Tilt-Chin Lift TechniqueThe head tilt-chin lift maneuver is an essential technique primarily used in patients without suspected cervical spine injuries. To perform this maneuver, one hand is placed on the patient’s forehead, and gentle pressure is applied backward to tilt the head. The fingertips of the other hand are positioned under...

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Internal Medicine
  • Clinical Epidemiology

Context:

  • Behcet's disease is a rare multisystemic inflammatory disorder.
  • Understanding its clinical spectrum and epidemiology is crucial for patient management.
  • This study provides insights from a Moroccan cohort.

Purpose:

  • To describe the clinical characteristics and epidemiological features of Behcet's disease.
  • To analyze the prevalence of various organ system involvements.
  • To highlight the long-term outcomes and complications.

Summary:

  • A retrospective review of 316 Behcet's disease patients diagnosed between 1981-1989.
  • Predominant involvement included mucocutaneous lesions (100% aphthous stomatitis), ocular (72%), articular (60%), and vascular (thrombophlebitis 69%).
  • Significant complications included blindness (88 patients), pulmonary infarction (6 cases), and neurological manifestations (16%).

Impact:

  • Provides valuable epidemiological data on Behcet's disease in North Africa.
  • Highlights the high burden of ocular and vascular complications.
  • Informs clinical practice and future research directions for this rare disease.
