Summary

Pulmonary carcinosarcoma, a rare lung cancer with both epithelial and mesenchymal cells, presents unique challenges in diagnosis. This case highlights its potential presence in small biopsies, necessitating careful differential diagnosis.

Background:

Pulmonary carcinosarcoma is a rare lung malignancy characterized by both malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components.
It exhibits distinct phenotypic characteristics and clinical behavior compared to non-small cell lung tumors.

Observation:

A case report of a 74-year-old male presenting with shortness of breath and a left lung mass detected via chest X-ray.
Initial bronchoscopic biopsy revealed a malignant tumor with necrosis and diffuse anaplastic cells.

Findings:

Surgical resection confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary carcinosarcoma.
Accurate tumor cell identification is more straightforward in resection material than in small biopsies.
