Summary

For periosteal osteosarcoma, wide surgical removal is key. Adjuvant chemotherapy does not significantly improve survival rates in patients with this rare bone cancer.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Skeletal Tumors
  • Bone Cancer Research

Background:

  • Periosteal osteosarcoma is a rare subtype of osteosarcoma.
  • Standard treatment involves wide surgical resection, but chemotherapy's role is debated.
  • This study analyzes factors affecting survival in periosteal osteosarcoma patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate clinical and treatment factors influencing survival in periosteal osteosarcoma.
  • To assess the impact of chemotherapy on patient outcomes.
  • To provide evidence-based recommendations for periosteal osteosarcoma management.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 33 patients with periosteal osteosarcoma treated at a single institution.
  • Surgical resection was the primary treatment for 32 patients.

  • Fourteen patients with grade 3 tumors received adjuvant chemotherapy.
  • Main Results:

    • The 10-year overall survival rate was 84%.
    • Disease-free survival at 10 years was 65% for surgically treated patients.
    • Chemotherapy receipt did not significantly impact overall survival (86% with chemotherapy vs. 83% without, P = .73).

    Conclusions:

    • Wide surgical removal is the essential treatment for periosteal osteosarcoma.
    • Adjuvant chemotherapy does not appear to enhance survival in these patients.
    • Focusing on surgical technique is crucial for optimal outcomes.
