Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia01:27

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...
Long-term Depression01:03

Long-term Depression

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...

Summary

Music therapy significantly improves depression and anxiety symptoms in working-age adults when added to standard care. This approach enhances overall functioning and offers a valuable treatment option.

Area of Science:

  • Mental Health
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Previous studies on music therapy for depression had methodological limitations.
  • The clinical model employed in prior research lacked clarity.
  • There is a need to establish the efficacy of music therapy as an adjunct treatment for depression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the efficacy of music therapy added to standard care versus standard care alone.
  • To assess the impact of music therapy on depression among working-age individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial with 79 participants diagnosed with depression.
  • Intervention group received 20 bi-weekly sessions of individual music therapy plus standard care.
  • Control group received standard care only.
  • Follow-up assessments at 3 and 6 months, measuring depression, anxiety, functioning, quality of life, and alexithymia.

Main Results:

  • The music therapy group showed significantly greater improvement in depression symptoms (MD 4.65) and anxiety symptoms (MD 1.82) at 3 months.
  • General functioning also improved in the music therapy group (MD -4.58).
  • The response rate was significantly higher in the music therapy plus standard care group (OR 2.96).

Conclusions:

  • Individual music therapy, when combined with standard care, is an effective treatment for depression in working-age adults.
  • Music therapy serves as a valuable enhancement to established depression treatment practices.
  • The findings support the integration of music therapy into mental health treatment protocols.
