Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.
Cancer02:18

Cancer

Cancers arise due to mutations in genes involved in the regulation of cell division, which leads to unrestricted cell proliferation. Modern science and medicine have made great strides in the understanding and treatment of cancer, including eradicating cancer in some patients. However, there is still no cure for cancer. This is largely due to the fact that cancer is a large group of many diseases.

Life Histories01:29

Life Histories

Constrained by limited energy and resources, organisms must compromise between offspring quantity and parental investment. This trade-off is represented by two primary reproductive strategies; K-strategists produce few offspring but provide substantial parental support, whereas r-strategists produce much progeny that receives little care. These strategies are related to an organism’s survival likelihood across its lifespan, which is represented by a survivorship curve. Three general types of...
RNA Stability01:53

RNA Stability

Intact DNA strands can be found in fossils, while scientists sometimes struggle to keep RNA intact under laboratory conditions. The structural variations between RNA and DNA underlie the differences in their stability and longevity. Because DNA is double-stranded, it is inherently more stable. The single-stranded structure of RNA is less stable but also more flexible and can form weak internal bonds. Additionally, most RNAs in the cell are relatively short, while DNA can be up to 250 million...
Tissues01:18

Tissues

Cells with similar structure and function are grouped into tissues. A group of tissues with a specialized function is called an organ. There are four main types of tissue in vertebrates: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous.

Cuban health professionals: will publishing perish?

Francisco Rojas

    MEDICC Review

    Summary

Despite a high physician-to-population ratio and strong medical research institutions, Cuban medical publications in international journals do not fully represent the country's public health research and practice. Key areas like primary health care are underrepresented in published works.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Research
    • Public Health
    • Biotechnology

    Background:

    • Cuba has a high physician-per-capita ratio and robust medical research institutions.
    • Since the 1980s, family medicine residency is mandatory for all new MDs.
    • Cuba possesses globally-respected biotechnology and medical research centers.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the representation of Cuban medical research and practice in national and international journals.
    • To identify disparities between the scope of Cuban medical research and its publication output.

    Main Methods:

    • Bibliometric analysis of publications by Cuban authors in national and international journals.
    • Content analysis of cited articles, focusing on research fields and collaborations.

    Main Results:

    • The volume and frequency of publications by Cuban authors do not align with the country's medical research capacity.
    • Highly cited international publications are concentrated in genetics, neurosciences, immunology, pharmacology, and oncology, often with non-Cuban co-authorship (approx. 80%).
    • Crucial public health topics like primary health care, infectious disease control, and social determinants of health are significantly underrepresented in citations.

    Conclusions:

    • There is a notable gap between Cuba's medical research and practice and its published output in international journals.
    • Key areas of Cuban public health research require greater visibility and dissemination.
    • International collaborations are prevalent in high-impact publications, but may overshadow domestic research strengths in other critical areas.
