Summary

Syphilis remains a concern in Switzerland, often presenting as posterior uveitis. Prompt diagnosis and penicillin treatment effectively resolved inflammation and improved vision in affected patients.

Background:

Syphilis infections show a stable rate in Switzerland (2006-2008), with 672 cases reported in 2008.
Uveitis is a common ocular manifestation of syphilis, affecting 2.5%-5% of cases.

Observation:

Six patients (5 male, 1 female; mean age 44.2) with posterior uveitis were studied from April 2007 to October 2009.
All patients tested positive for syphilis serology; one initially tested negative. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed positive results in five patients.

Findings:

Intraocular inflammation resolved in all patients treated with intravenous penicillin G.
A significant improvement in visual acuity was observed in all treated patients.
