Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the characteristics and causes of attempted suicide cases.
  • To identify key risk factors and prevalent methods used in suicide attempts.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 75 attempted suicide cases over 1.5 years (Jan 1996 - Jun 1997).
  • Data collected on demographics, occupation, method of attempt, and precipitating causes.

Main Results:

  • 85.4% of cases were aged 15-54 years; females (53.4%) and unmarried individuals (52%) predominated.
  • Housewives (32%) and students (28%) were common occupations. Organophosphorus compounds were used in 74.7% of attempts.
  • Psychiatric disorders (46.7%), marital/family disputes (25.4%), and relationship failures (10.6%) were leading causes.

Conclusions:

  • Urgent need for suicide prevention strategies.
  • Restriction on the sale of organophosphorus compounds is recommended to reduce access and mitigate attempts.
