Summary

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection significantly decreases natural killer (NK) cells, particularly the CD16+CD8+CD3- subset. This depletion begins early and remains constant throughout HIV infection stages.

  • To analyze natural killer (NK) cell-related phenotypes in individuals with varying stages of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

  • Flow cytometry and monoclonal antibodies were used to analyze NK cell phenotypes.
  • 168 HIV-infected patients (CDC Stages II, III, and IV) and 60 healthy controls were studied.
