Isradipine effectively lowers blood pressure in Thai patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension. This dihydropyridine calcium antagonist demonstrated significant reductions in diastolic blood pressure, confirming its therapeutic value.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Isradipine is a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist with vasodilator properties.
- It exhibits minimal negative inotropic effects and is a potent antihypertensive agent.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of isradipine in Thai patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension.
Main Methods:
- A single-blind, multicenter study involving 90 patients.
- Included a 2-week placebo pretreatment phase.
- Followed by 8 weeks of isradipine treatment, with dosage titration from 1.25mg to 2.5mg twice daily based on diastolic blood pressure response.
Main Results:
- 80% of patients (72/90) achieved a diastolic blood pressure reduction of ≥10 mm Hg.
- 53% of patients (48/90) reached a diastolic blood pressure of ≤90 mm Hg.
- Isradipine was well tolerated in the study population.
Conclusions:
- Isradipine, particularly at 2.5mg twice daily, is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for mild to moderate essential hypertension in Thai patients.
